Basics To Homeschooling Review

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” ~Aristotle

Some of the best ways to learn a new venture in life is by seeking wisdom and guidance from someone who has gone before you.  The wisest people on earth have sought out mentors who will teach them the ways of what they are learning, and this is the secret to their enriched life.  Home education is not any different.  As a homeschooling mom myself, I need guidance and wisdom from another mom mentor who will teach, share, bless, encourage, strengthen and challenge me in ways to help me grow exponentially.  I was so excited to have the opportunity to review How to HOMESCHOOL with Stunning Confidence, Contagious Joy, and Amazing Focus (DVD & Coursebook) published by Apologia Educational Ministries.  If you’re in a season where you need a little clarity, focus or encouragement than this review is for you!

Even though I have been home educating my children for five years, I still feel as if I am struggling with certain areas that I have yet to discover the ‘How To.’  The decision to home educating any child is not a decision to be taken lightly, yet I still find myself sometimes floundering, and this How To Homeschool Video Course could not have come at a better time.  I personally have taken the time to work through each chapter and parallel what I heard in a 15 minute session, with the course book.  I have to admit I have been challenged, encouraged and now have a renewed sense to the ‘WHY’ our family is home educating our four children.

Lets Take A Look A Look At The Two Components To This Video Course:

  • How to Homeschool 2 DVD Video Course– This course takes you on a journey as you begin your homeschool adventure, helps to answer questions if you have already started the home education process or just need some redirection.  There are fifteen chapters, with each chapter having a running time of 15-20 minutes.  The teaching conversations between Leslie Nunnery & Rachel Carman are very personal, relaxed and they make you feel as if you are sitting in the living room with them.

~Topics included in the DVDs are: How to Get the Most Out of This Course, Setting Goals for the Journey, Finding Support, Choosing Curriculum, Practical How-To’s, Organizing Your Homeschool Stuff, Organizing Your Homeschool Day, Tips From Veterans, Family Matters-Marriage, Family Matters-The Rest, Dealing with Opposition, High School Graduation and College, If College Is Not the End Game, You Can Make It and Continuing Education and Encouragement Opportunities.

  • How to Homeschool Course book– This course book parallels with each chapter on the video.  You can choose to read the material before or after watching the video.  Each chapter is simple in form and concise enough with the reading, questions, and homework so one does not feel overwhelmed.  The assignments can be as short or as long as you need depending on how much time you have available.  Most assignments you should be able to work through in one sitting.  This course book is very thought-provoking, and should be given adequate time to process the conversation between Leslie & Rachel, before responding with your answers.

~Just a few of my ‘take-aways’ from the course work are: Plan a family meeting & let my kids know the reasons as to why we are a home educating family, Plan out your long-term and short-term goals for each child, Get to know my kids learning styles and personalities, Make learning fun and exciting, and My relationship with my kids is more important than the curriculum I choose.

Moms are already busy enough, and adding home educating to the mix makes for a quickly over-whelmed teacher.  Yet, finding a mentor is the key to beginning a successful homeschool journey.  It is not always easy or conducive to find someone who has the time and energy to answer ALL the questions that will arise when you practically dive into home education.  This is why Leslie & Rachel created this practical DVD course, just for moms like us!

I had the privilege to meet and hear Rachel Carman speak, at a Teach Them Diligently Conference, and what I walked away with was renewed encouragement, practicality and a sense that she really believed in us as mothers to live out our convictions!  I found this same type of character building as I worked through this How to HOMESCHOOL with Stunning Confidence, Contagious Joy, and Amazing Focus (DVD & Coursebook).

It is truly amazing what can happen when us moms take the time to learn something new and seek out wisdom imparted to us by those who have gone before us.  We CAN live a successful homeschool life using someone else’s example!

We are at about the same number of year in our home education journey as you. I really enjoyed this course, as well. There is so much to be learned and encouraged with and this course does a nice job of that. – Lori
